Ibanez artist Double Neck
These typically have a serial number on the back of the headstock after 1974. This one has no serial and has a ric style slotted 12 string headstock (which I’ve never seen) and it says “special construction” on the truss rod cover. I’m assuming this is a prototype or custom ordered guitar. It also has beveled edges on the body which I understand is also not typical of artist Doublenecks. This guitar is super clean! 9 out of 10 and Plays perfectly with all original parts. This had been sitting untouched for decades. A true closet find. There’s hardly any. Corrosion on the hardware as there usually is on these. No dings, scratches or cracks. It’s like new with a slightly banged up original hard shell case. It has early super 80’s with a 2 way switch that I believe switches the pickups from hum-bucker to single coil. I listed this guitar a few months back and it did not meet my reserve. I did however find that there was great interest in this guitar from “Ibanez collectors World” which is a great forum of Ibanez fans. It was there I found out more info regarding the rarity of this guitar. It also spiked interest do to an old picture of Bob Weir from The Grateful Dead playing what seems to be this exact guitar. The story behind the picture is that the guitar belonged to the opening band and at sound check- Bob was checking it out. I believe He was a Ibanez endorsee at the time but he did not own the guitar or play it during the show. But it is my opinion and the popular opinion of the nice people at Ibanez Collectors World that it is in fact the same guitar as in the picture. This conclusion was come to based on the fact that no one has ever seen one of these with the slotted 12 string headstock, the beveled edges. And the wood markings on body seem to match up as well. However, I cannot prove it is the same guitar and to most this won’t make a difference in value. But, it’s a cool story!
