Realky wonderful playing G&L ASAT from the early years–all original with original case also in excellent condition. It’s very hard to date these so the best i can come up with is 1988–1990 even though the serial number on the neck plate indicates 1992–inside the neck date is April 17th but the year is illegible–it appears best to be 1988 or 1989–the curves of the 8 and the 9 at the top are about all that remains and they are nearly interchangeabe–there is also a red 2 inside the pocket–that is clear–the black hardwear and powder black pockguard were essentially replaced by chrome or nickel around 1990 from the G&L site info–most in fact by 1988 so this one likely falls somewhere in those years. At any rate it’s a beauty that plays like a dream and is freshly luthiered and set up and strung with d’darrio 10/46s and ready to go. One of Leo Fender’s last designs. MFD Pickups (Magnetic Field Design), very good sounding pickups, well balanced sound, they sound a bit thicker and more compressed than traditional tele pickups. The neck is a medium C profile, it has some mass to it without being overly thick. There are some marks on the body that I tried to show on the pics and a surface crack on the finish (pic 10). Rare Leo Fender Signature Headstock G&L ASAT w/ MFDs and Case. Made in Fullerton, CA USA. This guitar is a 2 owner, the original owner was a professional musician who toured mostly with country bands. From what I was told he only gigged with a couple of years, and then started using another guitar. He has owned it since the 90s, mostly playing it around the house or at church. This guitar is super clean, kept in a smoke free home in what I assume is the original GL case. I believe this guitar was made between 86-87, due to the crinkled coating on all the hardware. Very cool look that goes well with the sunburst finish. As far as condition goes, it’s in awesome playing shape. Action is low, neck is very straight, frets have probably been dressed and show little wear. There are plenty of finish scratches, a few dings, and some minor rash on the back. What you would expect from a 30+ year old guitar that’s been played. The MFD pickups sound fat and twangy, when you turn up the tone. You can chicken pick with it, or crank up the gain and play punk or grunge. Made to Leo’s specs, these 80’s guitars are much better than what Fender was putting out back then. Should only increase in value over time, has the Leo Signature on headstock! Please examine pictures, feel free to ask questions. Maple neck and fretboard.
