It has been stripped and clear coated and it features a groovy engraving on the neck plate. All original electronics to give it THE Jaguar sound. The fretboard is the elusive Brazilian Rosewood we all know and love and the discoloured clay dot fret markers that really always catch my eye. Neck Date: NOV 1963 B Serial Number: L26195 (1962 – 1963) Pots: 6336 (36th Week of 1963). What makes it special. It’s a unique instrument due to the finish and personal art on the neck plate. That worn-in “plays like butter” neck that only a vintage instrument played for decades can offer. The rhythm circuit wheels are a bit stiff, but function perfectly. The hardware has been polished and cleaned, but still shows scratches and wear. One of the case latches does not spring open. Someone has added a logo to the case (in the wrong spot, by the way). A’63 would not have the logo on the case, but someone thought it needed one anyway! The body and neck have some dings, please see the pictures. The pickguard has the inevitable “shrinkage”. What’s known to be non-original? The body finish. Refinished in the early 70’s. Tremolo Arm and Tip. Logo added to hard case. Fender introduced the JAG in 1962 as the fourth and last instrument in its original standard guitar lineup. Preceded by (1951), (1954) and (1958), the Jaguar was the only one of Fenders big-four guitars born in the 1960s, and it was in several ways the most distinctive among them. Introduced as Fender’s high-end model, the Jaguar was initially adopted by surf guitarists just as that fad was running out of wave. Jaguars everywhere began collecting dust until the punk explosion of the’70s and its subsequent mutations took it from relic to iconic. THE GUITAR The Jaguar had 22 frets and a significantly shorter 24-inch scale length, which was deliberately closer to the standard Gibson scale length of 24.75-inches rather than the standard 25.5-inch Fender scale length of the 21-fret Telecaster, Stratocaster and Jazzmaster. The Jaguars shorter scale and extra fret made for what Fender billed as faster, more comfortable playing. Its relatively smaller size notwithstanding, the Jaguar was indeed billed as Fenders new top-line guitar and was nothing if not feature laden. It had an offset bodydistinct from the Jazzmasters offset shapeand featured separate bridge and floating vibrato units. And if the Jaguars distinctive shorter scale length and extra fret werent all that obvious on first glance, the sheer amount of chrome and controls were. The Jaguar had the most elaborate circuitry of any Fender instrument. Although it and the Jazzmaster were dual-circuit guitars (lead and rhythm), the Jaguars lead circuit was more complex, with three slide switches on a chrome plate on the lower horn (compared to the Jazzmasters single toggle switch). The Jaguar had tall, narrow, high-output pickups that were surrounded by notched metal rings (claws) that reduced hum and concentrated the magnetic field beneath the strings, an unusual feature not found on any other Fender instrument except 1961s Bass VI. The Jaguar was also the first Fender guitar to be offered with a variety of neck widths. Four options were designated A, B, C and D from narrowest to wideststandard, slightly narrower than standard, and two wider than standard. These options were also made available on the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster from 1962 on. Finally, the introduction of the Jaguar marked the first appearance of a new Fender headstock logo known as the transition logo, so named because it bridged the gap between the the companys original spaghetti logo and the heavy black logo adopted at the end of the 1960s. Win Butler (Arcade Fire). Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt (Deerhunter). The Telecaster and the Stratocaster both were unqualified and ubiquitous successes by 1962, and the Jazzmaster had by then embarked on its own unusual odyssey quite apart from its original intended role as Fenders top guitar. More than the first two guitars, in fact, the Jaguar owed much to the Jazzmaster, which, despite lofty expectations, was immediately dismissed by the East Coast hollow-body jazz cats Fender aimed it at, only to find itself early in the next decade the darling of West Coast surf and instrumental rock groups whose reverb-drenched hits crested the charts between Kennedys election and the arrival of the British. Fender had also spent the 1950s playing David to Gibsons Goliath in a remarkable game of design one-upmanship that gave the world several of its most enduringly acclaimed and successful electric guitar models. And the new top-line guitar model that Fender was preparing to unveil in 1962 included a major design departure specifically intended to appeal to Gibson playersa short scale. With hindsight it might seem curious that early-60s Fender clung so tenaciously to the idea of a feature-laden high-end guitar. It had already scored its greatest successes with four innovative workhorse instruments (two guitars and two basses) remarkable for being elegantly and ingeniously simple rather than complex. Even so, Fender seemed convinced at the time that a more elaborate guitar design was the way forward in a bold new decade when incredible technological advances seemed like daily occurrences. And the Jaguar was nothing if not feature laden. A beautiful guitar, it had a Jazzmaster-like offset body (the two werent identicalthe Jaguars upper horn was and still is sharper than the Jazzmasters), and like the Jazzmaster it had separate bridge and floating vibrato units. Gazing directly at it almost required sunglasses. And the Jaguar eclipsed even the Jazzmaster in number of onboard controls; the former with eight (four switches, two knobs and two inset wheels) compared to the latters six (two switches, two knobs and two inset wheels). The Jaguar also had significantly different pickups than the Jazzmaster, which had big, wide single-coil pickups that sounded smooth and thick but were also highly susceptible to unwanted electrical hum because they were unshielded. The Jaguar had taller, narrower Strat-like high-output pickups that sounded much hotter. Further, Jaguar pickups were surrounded by notched metal rings (claws) that reduced hum and concentrated the magnetic field beneath the strings, an unusual feature not found on any other Fender instrument except 1961s Bass VI. With more controls than any other Fender instrument, the Jaguar had the most elaborate circuitry of any Fender instrument. In designing the Jaguar, Fender still clung to onboard string-muting mechanisms, as found on earlier instruments such as the Jazz Bass (1960) and Bass VI. The spring-operated mute on the Jaguars bridge was nonetheless largely ignored, as most guitarists favored manual muting techniques. Finally, the introduction of the Jaguar marked the first appearance of a new Fender headstock logo. Fender used its original thin spaghetti logo throughout the 1950s until Robert Perine, the adman who created Fenders stylish late-50s and 1960s advertising look (including the famous You wont part with yours either campaign), designed a thicker version of it eventually known as the transition logo, so named because it bridged the gap between the spaghetti logo and the heavy black logo adopted at the end of the 1960s. Perines new Fender logo began appearing in print ads around 1960, and Fender eventually adopted it as a headstock logostarting with the Jaguar. The Jaguar enjoyed mild popularity on its introductionBeach Boy Carl Wilson occasionally played one during the mid-60s, and Jimi Hendrix received a 63 model as a gift from Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones. Several other lesser-known guitarists favored the Jaguar during the models first years, including Eddie Bertrand, Dave Myers, Mary Kaye, Kathy Marshall, Paul Guma, Roy Lanham and Bye Bye Birdie star Jesse Pearson, who played a custom black Jaguar with gold-plated hardware and a gold-leaf scroll design on the body. Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Jaguar in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order with an Olympic White finish. This rare custom color example with matching headstock has transitional features seen from late’64 into mid 1965, including early hand dated gray bobbin pickups, a Pre-CBS style nitrate tortoise pickguard, L prefix serial number, Kluson Deluxe double line tuners, and pearl dot inlay on the unbound Brazilian rosewood fretboard! This is a played in and completely original example that will satisfy serious players and collectors alike, complete with the original vibrato arm and black tolex case. Both pickups have the staggered pole pieces introduced in’64, and this alder-bodied Jag has a crisp, snappy acoustic tone that translates well through the pickups. Of course, the Jaguar offers tonal options to both thicken up the sound and alternately make it even more sinewy and thin. The Rhythm Circuit provides one of the best sounds on this guitar, with a thicker, wooly tone that still has plenty of clarity, while adding warmth to your clean signal as well as giving an overdriven tube amp or your favorite fuzz pedal that little bit of extra low end push to make single note lines stand out. This Jag weighs in at 8lbs 5oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, with 12-52 roundwound strings, solid intonation, and comfortable action. The neck has a quintessential medium C shaped profile which borders on the more slender side of things at the nut and gains more roundness in the shoulders and a bit more depth by the time you reach the 9th fret and beyond. Ajority of the original gloss nitro lacquer is still present on the profile, with light palm wear down to the smooth, bare maple on the treble side edge from frets 1-4 and from fret 1-7 on the bass side. The Brazilian rosewood veneer fretboard has pearl dot inlays and the original frets, which have been recently leveled and crowned, providing a very pleasant and consistent playing experience. The frets currently show zero wear and play cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The neck has the Jaguar’s signature 24″ scale, with a 7 1/4″ fretboard radius and traditional Fender “B” nut width of 1 5/8. The original double line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact on the headstock and turn smoothly, with only light surface patina. The “Fender Jaguar” waterslide decal is intact and in great shape, with some oxidizing of the gold in the Fender name and wear through the “R” on Jaguar. On the heel of the neck, the original factory date stamp is clean and bold, noting an April, 1965 date for the neck, as well as the Jaguar’s model code (“1″, given that in’65 the Jag was still the top tier Fender model), and the B nut width. The original Olympic White paint stick markings can be seen in the pocket as well. All of the electronics work as they should, and the pair of original gray bobbin Jaguar pickups compliment each other well, with strong output and original winds on both pickups. The original switches are present in the lead circuit, hexagonal control plate, and the Stackpole pots date all the way back to the 9th week of’63. The pots and switch in the Rhythm Circuit are original as well. The routes on the body are untouched and original with stock shielding plates on both the body cavities and the underside of the pickguard. The original hardware on the body is completely intact and in fantastic shape, with clean chrome plating on the stock bridge base, mute, vibrato unit, control plates, and neck plate. The foam on the mute is even original (albeit hardened), and the mute still pivots up and would function ideally with a new piece of foam. The vibrato unit engages very smoothly and responds to the lightest touch, giving the player the ability to do subtle trills, surfy bends, and deeper dives with ease. The vibrato retains its original spring and arm, which locks in securely. The tortoise nitrate pickguard provides the perfect contrast to the custom color Olympic White finish, and this pickguard alone is extremely valuable and clean, sitting particularly flat on the body with no warping or shrinkage. In terms of cosmetic wear, this is a lovely example with a modestly yellowed and original Olympic White finish that shows t. Ight, horizontal lacquer checking on the entire body, with wide vertical checking on the back as well. There are various small dings and nicks around the edges of the body, and scattered marks on the back as well, with targeted buckle rash at the edge of the belly contour that reveals the bare alder below. The originality of the finish has been verified under a blacklight, and in this light the entire body, neck, and headstock have a uniform glow. The original black tolex case is included. This case features the core of the original handle, all three working latches, and a clean orange interior with case pocket intact. The leather on the ends is mostly missing, and “CGP” is written in small letters on the exterior. Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Jazzmaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A very early example with a January’59 neck date and late’58 pot codes, this guitar is clean and original aside from an older gloss nitro lacquer refinish and professional refret. The tone is quintessential Fender, with a pair of black bobbin pickups that deliver the sparkle and twang of a Telecaster, but with a warmth and depth to the tone that you simply can’t achieve with any other Fender model. The 1Meg CTS pots let more punch and top end snap through than lower values used on Teles and Strats and the range of tones these pickups provide is part of what makes the Jazzmaster such a versatile and essential instrument for the stage and studio. The pickups are well balanced with healthy output and original winds, providing a very distinct set of sounds in all three positions on the lead circuit toggle. Weighing in at 7lbs 14oz, this Jazzmaster is extremely dynamic and well balanced, both tonally and while hanging on your guitar strap! The guitar has been professionally setup in-house with 11-50 strings, low action, and solid intonation, and here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar we specialize in Fender Offset guitars. The neck has a particularly slim C profile, and since all of the necks were hand shaped at the Fender factory during this era, this does give each Jazzmaster a unique feel. The profile does gain significant depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, with a nice chunky C from roughly the 10th fret on up. The nut is just a hair over 1 5/8″ in what would become the standard “B width by 1962, with ideal string spacing that has just enough room for easy fingerstyle playing if desired. The guitar has been refretted with jumbo wire and the slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard has been re-radiused to modern Fender spec, measuring 9.5. The frets currently show no wear, the neck is arrow straight, and the truss rod nut is flush with the end of the fretboard, evidence that very little adjustment has been needed over the decades. The neck profile and headstock face were refinished with a clear gloss nitro that’s still very smooth and silky, and the headstock face has a replacement era correct “spaghetti” Fender waterslide decal as well. Perhaps most importantly, the original grease pencil “1/59″ date has been retained on the heel of the neck. The original single line Kluson Deluxe tuners are present and still work well with moderate patina on the gear housings. On the body, all of the electronics work as they should, and the original wiring harness is untouched, with CTS pots that all date back to late’58. The early harness is also notable for having the paper-in-oil caps that would be replaced with ceramic discs by late’60, and the underside of the gold guard is signed by “Esper, ” the Fender employee who wired the guitar 60 years ago. All of the original brass shielding tubs are intact and were painted red at some point in the past. The factory routes are unmodified and completely original, as are the contours of the’59 body which has the slightly thicker overall body with more rounded contours, typically seen before mid 1961. The original bridge works in concert with the stock Pat. Pending vibrato unit for an incredibly responsive and smooth feel, perfect for light surfy shimmies or deeper dives, jumping back into tune well and setup to perfection. You simply can’t get this kind of response from a modern Fender vibrato spring, and this early Pat. Pending example still has clean lettering and great shine to the chrome plating. Cosmetically, this guitar is a real stunner, with a very tasteful professional nitro lacquer refinish in Olympic White which shows just a touch of natural yellowing that compliments the light natural patina on the bridge saddles and back edge of the vibrato unit. The finish shows sparingly little wear aside from a couple small nicks, and the pickguard shows some light wear on the treble side of the pick path. The neck profile is flawless. Overall, this is a stunning’59 Jazzmaster, priced for a player, yet still extremely original for the discerning collector. Don’t miss out on this very original and exceptional playing example of Pre-CBS Fender quality! The original tweed hardshell case is included, with original handle working latches and clean interior. The case shows consistent ambering of the tweed and is overall in excellent shape with well kept brown leather ends.
