Beautiful 1963 Fender Stratocaster in extraordinarily clean condition with nice’63 fatter neck. Finish – both neck and body are original and in fantastic condition with slight lacquer checking and some playwear on the neck. Decal is particularly well preserved. Electronics – pickups, pots, capacitor, 3-way switch and majority of the wiring and solder joints (see below for further details). DC resistance is: Bridge – 5.78, Middle – 6.08, Neck – 5.60. Hardware – neck plate, tremolo block, bridge, saddles (super clean and seemingly always played with included bridge cover), tremolo arm, single line Kluson tuners, string tree, jack socket, strap buttons and (I would be prepared to bet) every screw. Frets – recent professional vintage correct refret by Huw Price (see video of this exact job by searching Youtube for the’Tone Twins TV’ channel). Original frets in case. Finger board had some small divots in the cowboy positions which have been professionally filled (see video mentioned above). Pickguard – Lashing celluloid guard (lightly aged to match original) on the guitar, original in excellent condition with Jag switch is in the case and can be used (see pics) – has shrunk slightly as is common. 4 x short lengths of cloth wire – required when removing the Jaguar switch wiring (the originals were presumably discarded when the switch was added). Neck date: September 1963. Body date: November 1963. Pot dates: 47th week of 1963. Neck dowel holes: present. Selmer guitar case and strap, serial numbered Fender instruction booklet, 60s wiring diagram (showing original wiring before the switch was installed – this was followed to put it back to stock), original pickguard and Jaguar switch assembly, removed original frets. The guitar has had one owner from new (two if you include me) and is in beautiful condition. In the late 60s, the original owner has a Jaguar switch installed. This required a routing in the body, aluminium shield and pickguard. Being a purist, I removed the switch, fitted an aged Lashing celluloid pickguard, block-filled the body route and repaired the aluminium shield. If you wanted to put the Jag switch in you could – its all in the case! Very clean vintage guitar – small area of play wear on the upper horn, small amount of play wear on the back of the neck, otherwise in excellent original condition. Has had a recent professional refret which included some filling of fingerboard divots. I could also potentially deliver depending on distances. Up for sale, a 1964 Fender Tremolux in excellent condition and in perfect working order. The very first Blackface-era iteration of the Tremolux with its “Fender Electric Instruments” faceplate, smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth, this visually stunning amp offers a broad range of sparkling cleans and rich overdrive textures. Extremely original with the stock pair of Oxford speakers, the tone is stunning and quintessential Blackface Fender, with the perfect amount of clean headroom before the amp cascades into slightly compressed tube overdrive around 5 on the volume dial. The vibrato has a strong pulse, and each channel has a similar voicing, although the Normal channel has just a touch more low end and midrange punch. The preamp is extremely original, retaining all of the blue molded Ajax caps which are essential to the sweet, musical character of Fender’s Blackface-era circuits. The transformers (manufactured by Schumacher, Fender’s primary transformer supplier in the’60s) include the original power transformer and choke which both date to 1963, while the output transformer is a genuine Tremolux transformer which was substituted at some point in the amp’s life and dates to early 1965. It’s entirely possible that this is an early, factory-installed transformer. The CTS pots are all intact, with visible date codes from the 7th week of’64. The power supply features a full compliment of vintage Sprague Atoms, and the power cable has been upgraded to a modern three-prong variety. The power tubes are a matched pair of Sovtek 5881s (6L6s), and the preamp tubes and 5AR4 rectifier are all vintage valves from the likes of Amperex and RCA. The tube chart is intact with only light wear and a clean “NE” date stamp, which translates to May of 1964. The speaker cab boasts the original pair of Oxford 10K5 ceramic magnet speakers. These speakers have clean black frames and have both been professionally reconed, with matching date stamps from the 5th week of 1964. All of the original fiberglass baffling is intact inside the cabinet too. The amp has its original smooth blonde tolex and gold sparkle grillcloth, a cosmetic combination only available for a few short months at the end of 1963 leading into the first half of’64. The tolex shows only very minor scuffing and edge wear, and the grillcloth has plenty of sparkle left in the thread. Both original raised Fender logos are intact, and the faceplate is very well-kept, retaining its full compliment of original witch hat knobs. All of the original hardware is accounted for including handle caps, nickel corners, sphinx glides (feet), and piggyback clipbars and threaded cabinet inserts. A modern one-button footswitch is included to engage the tremolo, along with a reproduction Fender speaker cable. Lovingly restored and retaining original electronics, hardware, and plastic parts, this guitar features a new genuine Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and professional refret executed by Portland Fretworks. Up for sale, a 1959 Fender Telecaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order. With a solid ash body and one-piece maple neck, these classic Fender tonewood ingredients deliver incredible clarity and dynamic snap, with a cutting, airy quality attributable to the top loader design. The guitar is medium weight at 8lbs 1oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and accurate intonation. Reflective of the thinner neck profiles seen in 59, the guitar has a more slender C profile carve at the nut, yet quickly fills out to a round, chunky handful by the 7th fret and beyond, with full shoulders and lightly rolled fretboard edges. 805 deep at the 1st fret, tapering to. 965 at the 12th. The fretboard has been refretted with vintage-spec 6230 fretwire, and the fretboard has a slightly flatter 8.25 radius. The new frets are flawless, playing effortlessly up the neck, which is straight with an optimally adjusted truss rod and truss rod nut flush with the neck heel. A new bone nut has been carved, measuring 1 5/8 in width. The headstock retains the original Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines which have uniform surface patina, turning smoothly and holding pitch well. The headstock was at one time fitted with a different tuner set, as evidenced by the. Cleanly doweled single mounting holes just beyond the footprint of the Klusons. The electronics are 100% original, with both black bobbin pickups intact with their stock windings, married to the stock pair of CTS pots which date between the 47th and 49th weeks of 1958. The bridge base and saddles are original, and both have been replated. The stock knurled chrome knobs are intact as well with their original plating, and the control plate is a more modern replacement. The pickguard is a modern Fender eggshell replacement with the proper mounting hole placement. The body features a w. Ell-executed nitro lacquer Blonde refinish with good transparency and faithfully retained edges on the slab body. Bit of reddish bleed on the body edges, mostly on the bass side upper bout and waist, either from an old finish, or from the plush red case lining. Ust a couple faint finish scratches on the back and one tiny finish chip on the back body edge near the rear strap button. The neck profile is flawless. It has been stripped and clear coated and it features a groovy engraving on the neck plate. All original electronics to give it THE Jaguar sound. The fretboard is the elusive Brazilian Rosewood we all know and love and the discoloured clay dot fret markers that really always catch my eye. Neck Date: NOV 1963 B Serial Number: L26195 (1962 – 1963) Pots: 6336 (36th Week of 1963). What makes it special. It’s a unique instrument due to the finish and personal art on the neck plate. That worn-in “plays like butter” neck that only a vintage instrument played for decades can offer. The rhythm circuit wheels are a bit stiff, but function perfectly. The hardware has been polished and cleaned, but still shows scratches and wear. One of the case latches does not spring open. Someone has added a logo to the case (in the wrong spot, by the way). A’63 would not have the logo on the case, but someone thought it needed one anyway! The body and neck have some dings, please see the pictures. The pickguard has the inevitable “shrinkage”. What’s known to be non-original? The body finish. Refinished in the early 70’s. Tremolo Arm and Tip. Logo added to hard case. Fender introduced the JAG in 1962 as the fourth and last instrument in its original standard guitar lineup. Preceded by (1951), (1954) and (1958), the Jaguar was the only one of Fenders big-four guitars born in the 1960s, and it was in several ways the most distinctive among them. Introduced as Fender’s high-end model, the Jaguar was initially adopted by surf guitarists just as that fad was running out of wave. Jaguars everywhere began collecting dust until the punk explosion of the’70s and its subsequent mutations took it from relic to iconic. THE GUITAR The Jaguar had 22 frets and a significantly shorter 24-inch scale length, which was deliberately closer to the standard Gibson scale length of 24.75-inches rather than the standard 25.5-inch Fender scale length of the 21-fret Telecaster, Stratocaster and Jazzmaster. The Jaguars shorter scale and extra fret made for what Fender billed as faster, more comfortable playing. Its relatively smaller size notwithstanding, the Jaguar was indeed billed as Fenders new top-line guitar and was nothing if not feature laden. It had an offset bodydistinct from the Jazzmasters offset shapeand featured separate bridge and floating vibrato units. And if the Jaguars distinctive shorter scale length and extra fret werent all that obvious on first glance, the sheer amount of chrome and controls were. The Jaguar had the most elaborate circuitry of any Fender instrument. Although it and the Jazzmaster were dual-circuit guitars (lead and rhythm), the Jaguars lead circuit was more complex, with three slide switches on a chrome plate on the lower horn (compared to the Jazzmasters single toggle switch). The Jaguar had tall, narrow, high-output pickups that were surrounded by notched metal rings (claws) that reduced hum and concentrated the magnetic field beneath the strings, an unusual feature not found on any other Fender instrument except 1961s Bass VI. The Jaguar was also the first Fender guitar to be offered with a variety of neck widths. Four options were designated A, B, C and D from narrowest to wideststandard, slightly narrower than standard, and two wider than standard. These options were also made available on the Stratocaster and Jazzmaster from 1962 on. Finally, the introduction of the Jaguar marked the first appearance of a new Fender headstock logo known as the transition logo, so named because it bridged the gap between the the companys original spaghetti logo and the heavy black logo adopted at the end of the 1960s. Win Butler (Arcade Fire). Bradford Cox and Lockett Pundt (Deerhunter). The Telecaster and the Stratocaster both were unqualified and ubiquitous successes by 1962, and the Jazzmaster had by then embarked on its own unusual odyssey quite apart from its original intended role as Fenders top guitar. More than the first two guitars, in fact, the Jaguar owed much to the Jazzmaster, which, despite lofty expectations, was immediately dismissed by the East Coast hollow-body jazz cats Fender aimed it at, only to find itself early in the next decade the darling of West Coast surf and instrumental rock groups whose reverb-drenched hits crested the charts between Kennedys election and the arrival of the British. Fender had also spent the 1950s playing David to Gibsons Goliath in a remarkable game of design one-upmanship that gave the world several of its most enduringly acclaimed and successful electric guitar models. And the new top-line guitar model that Fender was preparing to unveil in 1962 included a major design departure specifically intended to appeal to Gibson playersa short scale. With hindsight it might seem curious that early-60s Fender clung so tenaciously to the idea of a feature-laden high-end guitar. It had already scored its greatest successes with four innovative workhorse instruments (two guitars and two basses) remarkable for being elegantly and ingeniously simple rather than complex. Even so, Fender seemed convinced at the time that a more elaborate guitar design was the way forward in a bold new decade when incredible technological advances seemed like daily occurrences. And the Jaguar was nothing if not feature laden. A beautiful guitar, it had a Jazzmaster-like offset body (the two werent identicalthe Jaguars upper horn was and still is sharper than the Jazzmasters), and like the Jazzmaster it had separate bridge and floating vibrato units. Gazing directly at it almost required sunglasses. And the Jaguar eclipsed even the Jazzmaster in number of onboard controls; the former with eight (four switches, two knobs and two inset wheels) compared to the latters six (two switches, two knobs and two inset wheels). The Jaguar also had significantly different pickups than the Jazzmaster, which had big, wide single-coil pickups that sounded smooth and thick but were also highly susceptible to unwanted electrical hum because they were unshielded. The Jaguar had taller, narrower Strat-like high-output pickups that sounded much hotter. Further, Jaguar pickups were surrounded by notched metal rings (claws) that reduced hum and concentrated the magnetic field beneath the strings, an unusual feature not found on any other Fender instrument except 1961s Bass VI. With more controls than any other Fender instrument, the Jaguar had the most elaborate circuitry of any Fender instrument. In designing the Jaguar, Fender still clung to onboard string-muting mechanisms, as found on earlier instruments such as the Jazz Bass (1960) and Bass VI. The spring-operated mute on the Jaguars bridge was nonetheless largely ignored, as most guitarists favored manual muting techniques. Finally, the introduction of the Jaguar marked the first appearance of a new Fender headstock logo. Fender used its original thin spaghetti logo throughout the 1950s until Robert Perine, the adman who created Fenders stylish late-50s and 1960s advertising look (including the famous You wont part with yours either campaign), designed a thicker version of it eventually known as the transition logo, so named because it bridged the gap between the spaghetti logo and the heavy black logo adopted at the end of the 1960s. Perines new Fender logo began appearing in print ads around 1960, and Fender eventually adopted it as a headstock logostarting with the Jaguar. The Jaguar enjoyed mild popularity on its introductionBeach Boy Carl Wilson occasionally played one during the mid-60s, and Jimi Hendrix received a 63 model as a gift from Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones. Several other lesser-known guitarists favored the Jaguar during the models first years, including Eddie Bertrand, Dave Myers, Mary Kaye, Kathy Marshall, Paul Guma, Roy Lanham and Bye Bye Birdie star Jesse Pearson, who played a custom black Jaguar with gold-plated hardware and a gold-leaf scroll design on the body. Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Stratocaster in excellent condition and in perfect working order featuring a one-piece ash body, and complete with the original brown tolex hardshell case and polish cloth. This vintage Pre-CBS Strat is 100% original save for a professional refret with vintage-spec wire and a nitro lacquer Blonde refinish courtesy of Riggio Custom Guitars. Checking every box for Fender’s quintessential Pre-CBS Strat feature set, this guitar features untouched electronics and original hardware, a dark slab Brazilian board, exquisite mint green guard, and a slender neck profile carve very representative of 1960-61. A prime example of the pinnacle of golden age Fender quality craftsmanship and tone, this Strat features a one-piece ash body, a true rarity highlighted by a transparent gloss Blonde finish. The acoustic tone is g. Lassy and snappy with loads of top end detail and percussive cut, yet not to the detriment of the bass register. Accomplishing what a single resonant piece of ash and a tight grained Brazilian rosewood slab should do, the bass response is textured and present with a complex midrange character and a dynamic, clear note attack. Has a distinct voice, with clear, percussive snap, ample sparkle and densely packed harmonics. The “in-between” positions on the switch have that snappy, thinned-out squawk, with a scooped sound that still has some muscle and presence. Quite simply, this 1961 Stratocaster is a prime example of the reverence afforded the “Pre-CBS” era. The guitar is nice and light at 7lbs 2oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The maple neck has a. Fast, effortless slender C carve at the nut with slight shoulders, tapering appreciably up the board with more roundness and heft in the higher registers, measuring. 775 deep at the 1st fret and. 960 at the 12th. As part of Riggio’s finish relic’ing, the neck profile has. Flawless aging, offering an ideal gradient between ambered nitro gloss and perfectly smooth bare maple. The Brazilian rosewood slab fretboard sports original clay dots. Maintaining a 7 1/4 radius at the nut and only slightly flattened up the board for easier bending without reaching a 9 1/2 modern curvature. The Brazilian board is an extremely dark, tight-grained cut, and the guitar features new 6230 size vintage-spec fretwire which shows virtually no wear. A new bone nut has also been carved, measuring 1 5/8 in width. On the headstock, the original single line Kluson Deluxe tuning machines are intact, and the decal is a modern, vintage-spec replacement. The pencil date on the neck heel appears to have been applied after a previous refinish, reading 4-60 and consistent with all other date codes on the instrument. On the body, all of the electronics are original, with original windings on all three of the black bobbin pickups, metering at 5.7k ohms in the bridge, 5.4k in the middle, and 5.35k at the neck. The original shielding plate beneath the guard is intact too. The vibrato unit is 100% stock and complete with pat. Pending saddles and the original trem block. Currently utilizing three springs, the vibrato actuates very easily, with a notable touch-sensitive response and stability. From quick flutters to more drastic dives, this vibrato unit works just as designed and the trem block is an integral part of a Strat’s sustain and tonal character. The vibrato arm is original with its stock tip. The original jack cup and neck plate round out the hardware, both with original gleaming chrome plating. The body features a professional refinish courtesy of Riggio Custom Guitars in one of Fender’s finest custom color finishes, Blonde. The tint and saturation of the Blonde has been meticulously matched to other examples from 1960-61, highlighting the broad prominent grain of the ash which Vs outwards central to the top. The finish is topped off with a light, tasteful Riggio relic including light lacquer checking and a few strategic simulated nicks and case rub on the outer body edges. This is truly a fantastic Strat in every sense of the word, and the black bobbin pickups resonating through an ash body and slab Brazilian rosewood board is truly something to behold. The strong acoustic character of the instrument translates perfectly through your favorite Tweed or Blackface amp, and this Strat chimes and sparkles with the best. Up for sale, a 1961 Fender Telecaster in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. One of sparingly few original left-handed Pre-CBS ash-bodied Telecasters produced, this genuine vintage example is a stunning instrument, extremely original aside from a body-only nitro lacquer blonde finish and a professional refret. The guitar is also featherweight at 6lbs 15oz. A guitar sure to satisfy serious collectors with all of the original date stamps and codes intact spanning late 1960 and early’61, this Tele features a solid ash body, thick slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard, and maple neck, delivering exquisite twang with both articulate note attack and plenty of complex midrange content. We’ve had this Tele freshly restrung with 11-50 strings and dialed in for optimal playability and intonation here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar. The maple neck retains its original ambered gloss nitro lacquer finish, the majority of which has been worn down to the smooth bare maple from decades of contact with the palm. While the profile shape is a slender C at the nut, the neck gains tons of shoulder and roundness as you travel up the fretboard, measuring. 815 deep at the 1st fret and. 985 at the 12th. The slab Brazilian rosewood fretboard is an extremely tight-grained and dark cut, retaining its original 7 1/4 radius and refretted with medium jumbo fretwire. The frets show light wear on the crowns beneath the plain strings 1-7, with tons of meat and overall height. The nut is a hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 5/8 in width. On the headstock, the original Telecaster decal is intact along with the stock set of Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines which still function as intended. All of the electronics are original, with the pair of black bobbin pickups wired to the stock harness with the stock switch and pots. All of the original hardware is present including the distinctive Pat. Pending bridge plate which is folded and shaped differently from its right-handed compatriot, as Fender didn’t make a different tooling dye for left-handed examples and simply made do with a more utilitarian shape. Other stock hardware includes the neck plate, knurled metal knobs, control plate, and switch tip. The original white single-ply guard is also present, with one repair adjacent to where the control plate meets the guard. The body-only nitro lacquer blonde refinish was flawlessly executed by Riggio Custom Guitars with the perfect tint and a light, tasteful relic treatment to match the degree of aging on the original neck profile finish. The lacquer is also slightly more opaque in this area, yet the ash used was a very close match. The grain of the ash can subtly be seen through the blonde finish, and Riggio’s relic treatment includes horizontal checking and some small strategic nicks on the slab body edges.
