Up for sale, a late 1970s Gibson L-5 CES vintage archtop electric guitar in excellent condition and in perfect working order, featuring its original Blonde gloss nitro lacquer finish and pair of patent number T-Top humbuckers. Upon its introduction in 1951 as the electrified version of Gibson’s L-5C, the “CES” L-5 has been the gold standard for Gibson archtops, with solid carved tone woods used throughout. Boasting a full 17 lower bout with a carved, tight-grain premium spruce top and maple back and sides, the size of this archtop yields rich textured tones with a distinct woody quality and complex midrange character. Naturally, the solid ebony bridge and fretboard impart a glassy note attack and superior articulation integral in round, present tonalities in every register and the kind of note separation essential to complex Jazz chord voicings. The five-ply neck features three broad pieces of highly figured flame maple and two slender strips of walnut, with a very slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, and quite a bit of taper and increase in shoulder up the board, measuring. 770 deep at the 1st fret and graduating to. 915 at the 9th, where the profile begins to transition into the heel. The ebony fretboard features multi-ply binding and pearl block inlay, and the guitar has been partially refretted with medium jumbo wire from frets 1-13. The original frets are present from fret 14 on up, and the new fretwire is only fractionally wider than the original frets in the higher registers. The guitar plays effortlessly up the 25 1/2 scale with zero fretwear. The nut has been upgraded to a hand-carved piece of bone measuring 1 5/8 in width, and the guitar retains its original compliment of Kluson Sealfast gold-plated tuners. The torch headstock inlay and “Custom L-5″ truss rod cover is also present. The guitar does exhibit the usual U-shaped headstock repair, and a rosewood veneer has been added to the back of the headstock, along with two pieces of maple cleanly grafted in behind fret 1 on the outer thirds of the five-ply neck. The repair is perfectly smooth to the touch, with targeted gloss nitro lacquer overspray. All of the original electronics function as intended, with untouched solder on the gold covers and patent number baseplates on the T Top humbuckers. The ebony bridge is a modern replacement, and the hardware includes the original quartet of black witch hat knobs with gold caps as well as the original etched gold-plated tailpiece which only shows light surface patina at the hinge. The pickguard is completely intact, remarkable for the propensity for these guards to offgas and disintegrate over time. This guard is completely intact, with great transparency, multi-ply binding, and only a bit of spidering in the tort. Visible through the F hole, this L-5 retains the original Norlin-era Union Made label. The original high gloss Natural nitro lacquer finish exhibits some scattered minor nicks and scuffs on the body as a whole, yet nothing particularly notable. The neck profile features highly figured broad dimensional tiger flame, and the lacquer on the profile shows a few minor, shallow marks, not distracting to the palm while fretting. This Gibson L-5 CES is everything that an L-5 purports to be, with impressive nuanced tones both acoustically and plugged in. A 1990’s Gibson USA brown tolex hardshell case is included. Up for sale, a 1969 Gibson SG Standard in excellent condition and in perfect working order. One of the last great SGs of the 1960s, this guitar retains all of the features of the SG’s heyday, with original Patent # stickered T Top humbuckers, long frame chrome Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, and deep carve on the body contours. We’re huge fans of these SGs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, and no other Gibson can deliver the immediate attack and harmonic rich tone of these “large’guard” T Top equipped Gibsons of the late’60s. The bridge pickups is surprisingly clear and twangy, with tight low end and plenty of aggressive snarl. The middle and neck positions have incredible body, and a meaty fullness that stays focused and powerful, smoothing out nicely as you roll off the tone knob. Weighing in at just 7lbs 4oz, this guitar is featherweight and very acoustically resonant from years of constant strumming. Setup with a fresh set of 10-46 strings and very slinky low action, few guitars are as effortless to play and tonally exquisite as this vintage SG Standard! The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C shaped profile down near the nut, gaining incredible heft and depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, achieving full “baseball bat” girth by the time you reach the 7th fret and beyond. The 1 9/16 nut width (standard for Gibson SGs post-1964 through the’70s) makes open chords easy, and the depth of the profile fills the palm comfortably further up the neck in particular for a substantial feel while soloing. The guitar has been cleanly refretted with wire that has the same width as the original frets and a bit more crown. These frets show virtually no wear and play cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. On the headstock, the guitar has been fitted with a set of vintage Gibson Deluxe, Kluson-made tuners that turn very smoothly and hold pitch well with new double ring tulip buttons. There’s a bit of light flaking of the details within the pearloid on the Gibson logo, and the headstock is notable for having a serial number more in line with late’68, as well as no “Made in USA” stamp and no volute (both pre-1969 features). All of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots, untouched solder joints, stock tone caps, and Switchcraft jack and switch. The Maestro Vibrola is one of the most effective and often overlooked vibrato designs in guitar history, working extremely well for quick flutters, surfy shimmies and deep dives with ease, jumping back to the original pitch and responding to a light touch. The vibrato arm on the unit is a new replacement, while the spring and rest of the Maestro is 100% original to the instrument. The Walnut nitro lacquer has a very deep and rich appearance with wide lacquer checking across the entire body. There is moderate buckle rash on the back and various small nicks and dings around the back edges of the body. At one time the guitar was converted to a stoptail and recently reverted to its stock configuration with the Vibrola. The stoptail holes were cleanly plugged with mahogany and finished to match the otherwise original Walnut nitro lacquer (mostly hidden beneath the Vibrola). The neck does exhibit a tight and professionally repaired heel crack, best seen on the inside of the bass side body cutaway in the included close up photo. The neck is very stable and the repair is stronger than the original joint while being clean and non-obtrusive. A newer Gibson form-fit hardshell case is included. Guitar is that the original P90s were upgraded back in the late 60s/early 70s to the PAF’Patent No 2737842′ that are widely known as some of the best. What is more, the. Has been reverse wired to give that out of phase sound! A real killer tone! This is a true players guitar – you’ll not get a better visual look and sound as this one! Serial number is 887565. Weighs in at a very light 6.6lbs. This guitar has been checked over and restrung, where necessary, to make it a playable standard. The previous owner played this for years as his main guitar, hence the upgraded pickups. There is crazing throughout the guitar, adding crazy character to this! There looks to have been a neck break in the past, which has been safely and extremely securely repaired confirmed by our luthier as a very very sturdy repair – it will not bother you again! There are also remnants of some additions in the 70s on the back of the headstock. Again, these will not bother you at all! The back of the body has plenty of buckle rush also. Again, this is not a collectors grade guitar but you will certainly not find a better sounding, or looking version of this guitar! We believe that this started its life as an SG Junior (due to the lack of binding on the neck), but has gradually been upgraded to how it stands today. This guitar has had the P90s upgraded in the late 60s/early 70s to T-Top PAF pickups, hence the professional and clean route at the neck position. The caps have been changed (but original pots) to enhance the out of phase sound. Apart from this, we believe the rest is original.
