1968 Gibson SG Special Vintage Electric Guitar Cherry with Maestro Vibrola

Up for sale, a 1968 Gibson SG Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order with a gloss Cherry lacquer finish and Maestro Vibrola tailpiece. One of the last one-piece mahogany neck SGs of the’60s, this SG Special has an authoritative, clear acoustic voice that translates well through the P-90 pickups with rich harmonic overtones. This SG sustains beautifully with a dynamic, glassy quality that lends itself to ripping drive and sparkling cleans. The guitar is featherweight at 7lbs 2oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and strung with a fresh set of 11-50 strings, this SG plays exceedingly well with comfortable, low action. The one-piece mahogany neck has a medium C profile carve at the nut, with lots of taper and a fuller, rounder shape as you travel up the Brazilian rosewood fretboard. The profile depth measures. 850″ at the 1st fret, graduating to 1.020″ at the 12th. The original wide/flat Gibson frets, having been recently leveled and crowned and currently show no wear. The nut measures 1 9/16 in width. The headstock is fitted with a set of vintage-spec Kluson Deluxe double line strip tuners with white buttons. This SG was originally fitted with a set of cheaper import tuners used briefly by Gibson in the late’60s, and the Klusons currently installed offer improved tuning stability. On the body, the original wiring harness is largely intact, with three of the original CTS pots dating to the 50th week of 1968, with one modern replacement. There is one small mini toggle hole central to the knob compliment which has been cleanly plugged with targeted lacquer touchup. As there is a very slight repair on the inside edge of the bass-side body horn, this extra mahogany ensures the stability of the neck joint. The pickguard is a modern replacement, while the original quartet of witch hat knobs are intact. The hardware includes the original bridge with “lightning bolt” compensated saddle, and this bridge can also be used as a wraparound to bypass the vibrato if desired. With that said, this vibrato is particularly responsive and smooth, and the break angle from the bridge to the vibrato comb is ideal. The vibrato base and spring are original, while the comb (where the strings anchor) and arm are brand new replacements. Cosmetically, this SG retains its original vibrant Cherry nitro lacquer finish which shows tight horizontal lacquer checking on the body, with some scattered small dings and finish chips on the body as a whole, and one spot of light targeted buckle rash central to the upper bout. The guitar has zero repairs or funny business at the headstock joint, and this SG Special is a professionally setup and recently serviced example with a resonant body, recent fret dress, and great sounding pair of pickups. Up for sale, a 1965 Gibson SG Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Weighing in at only 6lbs 13oz, this SG is incredibly lively and clear acoustically, ringing out with a bark and authority that only comes from a guitar that’s been consistently and lovingly played for decades. The stock P-90s absolutely roar and can deliver everything from glassy, articulate cleans to growling heavy overdrive with ease. Few instruments are as dynamic and simply soulful as this SG Special, which has been freshly restrung with 11-50 strings here at our shop, Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, and dialed in for optimal action and intonation. The one-piece mahogany neck has a C shape that’s notably slim and fast, gaining just a bit more shoulder and fullness in the higher registers of the fretboard. On the Brazilian rosewood fretboard, the o. Riginal wide/flat fretwire is intact. These frets have been leveled in the guitars lifetime and are firmly in fretless wonder territory, currently showing m. Oderate uniform wear on frets 1-3, with lighter wear just beneath the plain strings until fret 6. The nut measures a 1 9/16 in width. The headstock has been fitted with a set of modern aged Kluson single line gears which turn smoothly and hold pitch well. These tuners perfectly match the look and footprint of the originals and have arguably better stability. The electronics are 100% stock aside from a newer three-way switch, with otherwise untouched solder joints and CTS pots that date to’65. Both original P-90 pickups have clean bobbins, original winds, and stock covers. The “lightning bolt” wraparound bridge is a new modern chrome replacement from MojoAxe which is compensated for optimal intonation with a plain G string. The bridge works well with the original chrome Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, which has a smooth, responsive feel and original arm. The small batwing pickguard, switch surround, and reflector cap knobs are stock too. The nitro lacquer Cherry finish is completely original with no touchups or overspray and has gorgeous lacquer checking in tight lines across the entire body. The neck has been professionally reset, as the original glue had come loose around the majority of the joint, and the neck was reset to its original viable angle. There is also a very thin split in the mahogany which has been addressed, running vertically on either side of the forward strap button. The guitar shows a. Ssorted minor nicks and dings around the edges of the body from honest use, along with light buckle rash on the back and a few small finish chips on the headstock edges. 1965 Gibson SG Junior Vintage Electric Guitar Bound Neck Pelham Blue with Vibrola

Up for sale a 1965 Gibson SG Junior, expertly restored with a custom color Pelham Blue finish. The sound is warm and wooly without lacking definition, delivering the glassy and dynamic top end character which is in large part why Juniors interact so well with a variety of tube amps. Weighing in at only 6lbs 8oz, this SG is lively and resonant. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and currently strung with 10-46 strings, this SG features low, comfortable action and accurate intonation. The one-piece mahogany neck has a C profile which starts out very slender and fast-feeling at the nut, graduating to full “baseball bat” territory by the time you reach the 7th fret, and as deep and girthy as any’50s Gibson neck from the 9th fret and beyond. It’s a wonderful profile that feels effortless in the palm and has more substance than many Gibson necks of the era. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard is a rare mid-60s example with fretboard binding, and the original frets are intact. The frets have been recently leveled and are immaculate, and these frets are firmly in “fretless wonder” territory, sitting low to the board. On the headstock, a set of new Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact with white buttons. The serial number is no longer imprinted on the headstock due to the Pelham Blue refinish. The chrome bridge with “lighting bolt” compensated saddle is a modern reissue furnished by MojoAxe which has both the proper vintage look and performance while also being compensated for a plain G string, ensuring optimal intonation with most string gauges. There’s just enough break angle between the saddle and short frame Maestro Vibrola to keep the strings stable and provide the necessary downward pressure for optimal sustain. The Vibrola base, spring, and comb are original, while the arm is a modern reissue, and this is an extremely smooth and responsive vibrato for quick dives and warbles. The pickguard and reflector cap knobs are also modern reissues. Cosmetically, this guitar is clean as can be, and the Pelham Blue finish was expertly applied, taking great care to retain the original carve and contours on the body. There’s barely a scratch on the instrument and this is an excellent vintage SG, professionally setup and original in all the ways that count. A brown tolex Gator hardshell case is included. Beautiful circa 1966 SG Jr. Finished in Heritage Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer sporting a highly figured Brazilian rosewood fretboard and Honduran mahogany body and neck. Finish is rich and vibrant with little signs of fade. NO cracks, NO breaks, NO repairs. Featherweight at 6 pounds on the nose. Plays and sounds great. Some dings, scratches and evidence of play, as you might reasonably expect from a 45 year old vintage axe. Appears to be ALL ORIGINAL. Pots date to 1965, so could be either a’65 or a’66. Original very hot P-90 ohms out near 9K! Plugged in, this is one sweet sounding Junior. Rings out like only old wood can. Very nice player and extremely attractive. Increasingly hard to find one from this vintage that is unbroken. Tuners appear to have have never been off. Vintage Gibson SG hardshell case with marigold interior in excellent condition included. Controls work perfectly with no static or noise. Neck is straight and it plays perfectly with low, comfortable action. Truss rod adjusted, pole pieces adjusted, intonation set. Just set-up with new. We’re huge fans of these SGs here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, and no other Gibson can deliver the immediate attack and harmonic rich tone of these “large’guard” T Top equipped Gibsons of the late’60s. The bridge pickups is surprisingly clear and twangy, with tight low end and plenty of aggressive snarl. The middle and neck positions have incredible body, and a meaty fullness that stays focused and powerful, smoothing out nicely as you roll off the tone knob. Weighing in at just 7lbs 4oz, this guitar is featherweight and very acoustically resonant from years of constant strumming. Setup with a fresh set of 10-46 strings and very slinky low action, few guitars are as effortless to play and tonally exquisite as this vintage SG Standard! The three-piece mahogany neck has a medium C shaped profile down near the nut, gaining incredible heft and depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard, achieving full “baseball bat” girth by the time you reach the 7th fret and beyond. The 1 9/16 nut width (standard for Gibson SGs post-1964 through the’70s) makes open chords easy, and the depth of the profile fills the palm comfortably further up the neck in particular for a substantial feel while soloing. The guitar has been cleanly refretted with wire that has the same width as the original frets and a bit more crown. These frets show virtually no wear and play cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. On the headstock, the guitar has been fitted with a set of vintage Gibson Deluxe, Kluson-made tuners that turn very smoothly and hold pitch well with new double ring tulip buttons. There’s a bit of light flaking of the details within the pearloid on the Gibson logo, and the headstock is notable for having a serial number more in line with late’68, as well as no “Made in USA” stamp and no volute (both pre-1969 features). All of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots, untouched solder joints, stock tone caps, and Switchcraft jack and switch. The Maestro Vibrola is one of the most effective and often overlooked vibrato designs in guitar history, working extremely well for quick flutters, surfy shimmies and deep dives with ease, jumping back to the original pitch and responding to a light touch. The vibrato arm on the unit is a new replacement, while the spring and rest of the Maestro is 100% original to the instrument. The Walnut nitro lacquer has a very deep and rich appearance with wide lacquer checking across the entire body. There is moderate buckle rash on the back and various small nicks and dings around the back edges of the body. At one time the guitar was converted to a stoptail and recently reverted to its stock configuration with the Vibrola. The stoptail holes were cleanly plugged with mahogany and finished to match the otherwise original Walnut nitro lacquer (mostly hidden beneath the Vibrola). The neck does exhibit a tight and professionally repaired heel crack, best seen on the inside of the bass side body cutaway in the included close up photo. The neck is very stable and the repair is stronger than the original joint while being clean and non-obtrusive. A newer Gibson form-fit hardshell case is included.
