1971 Gibson Les Paul 58/54 Goldtop Standard Vintage Electric Guitar P-90s
Up for sale, a 1971 Gibson Les Paul 58/54 Goldtop in excellent condition and in perfect working order, 100% original aside from a new bone nut. A very rare “reissue” model offered in sparingly small quantities in the early 1970s, this Les Paul is an anomaly of Norlin-era Gibson, as it was produced with a one-piece mahogany body, one-piece mahogany neck with no volute, and a wraparound tailpiece design. Offered as a 1958 reissue, the factory specs actually directly reflected a 1954-55 Les Paul Standard. Outfitted with the original pair of clear bobbin P-90 pickups with cream “Gibson” embossed covers, this Les Paul has a glassy, dynamic quality, bringing to the fore the rich, midrange growl associated with the overwound P-90 design. Weighing a very manageable 9lbs 13oz and professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, we’ve dialed in this Les Paul with low action and fresh 10-46 strings. The one-piece mahogany neck has a medium C-shaped profile carve at the nut, with modest shoulder and a fuller feel up the board without getting too baseball batty, measuring. 860″ deep at the 1st fret and graduating to 1.015″ at the 12th. On the bound rosewood fretboard, the original wide Gibson fretwire has a surprising amount of meat and a bit more crown than a typical’70s Gibson fret dress. The frets retain their full factory height, showing moderate uniform wear on frets 1-5 and lighter wear beneath the plain strings until fret 9. A hand-carved bone nut has been installed, measuring 1 11/16 in width, ensuring optimal sustain and note clarity. The headstock retains the original Gibson Deluxe double line, double ring tuners which still function as intended. There is wear through the clear coat adjacent to the tuner ferrules on the headstock face and a darker tint central to the headstock on the back, the effect of an oil used to grease the tuner gears in the past (the finish is stable). The wiring harness is untouched, with stock pickups, Sprague “Black Beauty” tone caps, and CTS pots which date to the 42nd week of’71. Hardware includes the original lightweight aluminum wraparound tailpiece, and the original quartet of gold speed knobs are intact too. The 100% original nitro lacquer finish is a pitch perfect Goldtop shade with the right balance of saturation and bronzing to appeal to’50s Goldtop fans. The cream binding that frames the top is thinner in the cutaway as well, matching’50s spec. The body exhibits a bit of light buckle rash at the bass side waist on the back, with some nicks along the back body edge. The top is extremely clean, showing just light scuffing in the pick path and a few scattered marks on the lower bout. The neck profile shows one filled nick smooth to the touch behind fret 10 on the treble-side shoulder of the profile, and a few additional small shallow marks on the profile, but nothing distracting while fretting. A vintage black tolex form-fit hardshell case with blue plush interior is included. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
