Up for sale, a 1973 Gibson EB-4L heavily played and structurally sound. An instrument with a simple control layout and effective array of sounds, the EB-4L delivers plenty of thump and growl, with flatwound D’addario Chromes providing both smooth low end and enough top end articulation to keep things present in a mix. Given how much this bass has been played over the past 45+ years, the mahogany body is very resonant and quite lively, with a dynamic response that you simply can’t get from a new instrument. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, this EB-4L thumps with the best and has been setup with comfortable action. The three-piece mahogany neck has a r. Ound C shape, with plenty of chunk and heft in the higher registers and a thick slab rosewood fretboard. The nut measures 1 9/16″ in width, and the scale length is a full 34″. The original medium jumbo frets are present, showing h. Eavy fretwear on frets 1-5, with wear extending only extending beneath A and D until fret 7, and minimal fretwear further up the board. The truss rod is responsive, the neck is straight, and the bass plays cleanly up the neck with comfortable action and no buzzing or dead spots. The stock Schaller-made chrome tuners turn very smoothly and hold pitch as they should. The electronics are untouched, with CTS pots that date to the 20th week of’73. While the finish now appears a deep shade of Walnut, this bass was originally a bright Cherry, with the finish transitioning over time. The neck profile still has a notable red tint, and under the pickguard the bass is still a very glossy vibrant Cherry. The gloss nitro lacquer finish is 100% original, exhibiting d. Uckle rash on the back and plenty of scuffs and nicks, and light wear in the finish clear coat around knobs. The neck profile has palm wear on the bass side edge on frets 1-5 and on the treble side edge from frets 1-11, with one chip into the rosewood fretboard on the bass side edge of fret 20 which doesn’t affect playability. Overall, this EB-4L is a versatile instrument with original electronics, a professional setup with new flatwound strings, and a full 34 scale.
