Rosewood Fret board and Maple Neck! Kurt Cobain was rarely seen without an offset guitar, if ever. And the Mustang played a key role for a very important part of his band’s career, as he nearly exclusively used one during the iconic In Utero tour. In 2012, Fender honored that guitar with a Kurt Cobain signature model Used on the Talking Heads first two albums, Talking Heads: 77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food. Beautiful Vintage Nitro Relic Checking from an early nitrocellulose lacquer most often used during Fenders original 1950’s and 60’s golden age which often produced a “nitro” (the kind of wear typically associated with a nitrocellulose lacquer finish) or “relic” and/or “check” finish. Nitro finishes, may crack and yellow with age, and they can check (guitar-speak for fine hairline cracks) with age. They get thinner and more brittle as they age because the thinners in them continue to evaporate throughout an instruments lifetime. These characteristics actually hold special appeal for many guitarists, as the cracking, yellowing, checking and aging common to this finish type are exactly what many aficionados love about nitro. Fender still uses nitrocellulose lacquer finishes on a select group of instruments (Road Worn and American Vintage series, various artist models). Variants in use include satin nitrocellulose lacquer (Highway One models, Jim Root Stratocaster), which is a flatter finish, and thin-skin nitrocellulose lacquer (Vintage Hot Rod models), which has a thinner sanding sealer or lacquer undercoat. Introduced just before the CBS takeover of Fender, the Mustang was part of a redesign of Fender’s line of student level guitars which included the Duo-sonic and Musicmaster. The Mustang offered somewhat more sophisticated electronics than earlier student guitars and also featured a 24-inch scale length. In its earliest era, the Mustang was available in a shorter 22 1/2-inch scale length, but these guitars are very uncommon. Since being discontinued in 1982, the Mustang has been reissued a number of times, and has found some popularity among alternative and indie rock players. Value is just going up! Plugged it up to an amp and everything still works fine as it has all of these years. Fender’64 Mustang RED. Serial Number on plate: L560001. Dated NOV64 on neck. This is a very old second hand, vintage Fender guitar. Please understand that second hand goods of this age often may have other scratches, dents, damage, etc. That do not appear in the image and we have documented from each side in pictures. It has been played a few times over many years and we just plugged into an amp to make sure it is still in the same working order. Please ask questions about anything you would like to know more about up front. Manufactured in 1964, the first year with authentic serial number on plate and neck dated. It is the original Mustang produced from August 1964 1982 with some special edition releases through later years such as the Curt Cobain model. Is it an individual from the pre CBS period of transition between American inventor and founder of Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company, Clarence Leonidas “Leo” Fender to CBS in 1965. Rosewood has long been used to create guitars thanks to its beautiful sound, resonance and comfortable, hard wearing properties which make it ideal for fret boards. Now, with the new CITES laws coming into effect, those guitars you own could potentially be the last ones using that wood. The CITES law was introduced on the 2nd of January 2017 and put restrictions on how certain woods were traded across international borders especially the likes of rosewood. The sale, import and export of rosewood gradually becomes more difficult to navigate, availability will surely suffer too. This means that guitar companies will look to other types of wood to create their guitars, and potentially phasing out rosewood altogether, as hinted at by Fender. THIS MEANS THAT YOUR ROSEWOOD GUITAR COULD EVENTUALLY BECOME A COLLECTORS ITEM IN AS LITTLE AS 10 YEARS AS GETTING HOLD OF A GUITAR WITH ROSEWOOD BECOMES AS SCARCE AS AN ORIGINAL 58 LES PAUL! In summary, this is basically how the CITES law will affect guitarists: Importing/exporting rosewood will become very expensive for brands. Guitar brands will eventually start switching to more sustainable woods that dont require certification. Getting hold of a rosewood guitar will soon become difficult. You can travel with your guitar without certification unless youre travelling with over 10kg of Rosewood. After 2nd Jan 2017. However, you may be asked to prove that your guitar is older than this on rare occasions.. Your Rosewood guitar will potentially become a collectors item. May 2017 – Lee Glynn.
