Up for sale, a 1987 Gibson Les Paul Custom Lite in excellent condition and in perfect working order. A first-year example of this short-lived model, the Custom Lite features the same classic tone woods and appointments associated with a Custom, yet with a notably more slender and lightweight mahogany body as well as a coil tap switch which functions for both humbuckers. Most impactful tonally are the pair of original Tim Shaw PAF pickups, only seen on the very first examples of this model. Featherweight for a Gibson with this tone wood compliment at only 7lbs 15oz, this Les Paul is plenty resonant and sustains beautifully as any good Gibson should. We’ve had this Gibson professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar and dialed in with fresh strings and low action. The mahogany neck has a f. Ull C shaped profile with more of a’50s feel overall and good shoulder, and while the profile does measure a more slender. 834 at the 1st fret, it quickly fills out and achieves plenty of roundness, measuring. 990 at the 12th fret. Unlike the recent reissues of this model, this genuine vintage example has a bound slab ebony fretboard with pearl block inlay and original fretwire. The frets are remarkably clean and retain their full factory height, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3. The nut measures a full 1 11/16 in width, and on the headstock the original Grover tuning machines are intact with original metal tulip buttons. With the switch engaged in the down position, the tone is notably snappier without being thin. It’s one of the most effective and simple coil tapping systems every devised by Gibson. The original Nashville bridge and stopbar tailpiece are intact, with a new pair of Gibson gold strap buttons. The guitar had previously been fitted with a Bigsby, and there are a few small mounting holes adjacent to the tailpiece and rear strap button which have been filled and touched up to better blend in with the otherwise original Ebony gloss nitro lacquer finish. The guitar exhibits light vertical lacquer checking on the top, with targeted buckle rash on the back on the bass side upper bout adjacent to the subtle belly contour, and a few other minor dings on the guitar as a whole. The binding and headstock inlay is deeply ambered, and there’s some light checking on the neck binding too. This first year Les Paul Custom Lite is a lovely, modestly played example, professionally setup and ready to be played. A hardshell case is included.
