Up for sale, a 1977 Rickenbacker 4001, honestly played, extremely original, and professionally setup to play its best. Featuring an ambered Mapleglo finish and neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker has been played hard with the kind of rich acoustic response and played-in feel that one wants from a vintage piece. The bass thumps and growls with the best and the sustain is near endless. Currently strung with roundwound 45-100 strings, the two original Hi-Gain single coil pickups deliver plenty of broad low end fullness without sacrificing Rickenbacker’s signature midrange growl. The bass is well-balanced on a strap at 9lbs 5oz and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with comfortable action and solid intonation. The neck has a fairly full C shaped profile with a smooth gloss finish and just enough roundness in the shoulders to feel substantial, measuring. 910 deep at both the 1st and 12th frets. The 33 1/4 scale is Rickenbacker’s traditional long scale, and the slab rosewood fretboard features the original slender fretwire. The frets have their full factory height, showing u. Niform wear on frets 1-5 and lighter wear beneath the A and D strings extending until fret 11. The neck is straight, the truss rods are optimally adjusted, and the bass plays well in every register. The stock nut measures a full 1 5/8 in width. The headstock features the original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover, as well as stock tuning machines that turn very smoothly and hold pitch well. The headstock also boasts the maple “wings” used in this era instead of the more common contrasting walnut wings. The bass does exhibit a. Repaired diagonal split on the bass-side edge of the neck profile extending behind frets 1-3. The repair is smooth to the touch, with additional palm wear through the gloss extending to fret 5 and a few scattered tiny nicks in the higher registers. The instrument is structurally sound and holds pitch perfectly at full tension. All of the electronics work as they should, with original CTS pots which date to’76 and a “QL” Rick-o-Sound jack plate serial prefix, conclusively dating the bass to December of 1977. The chrome hardware on this bass is particularly clean and all original, with fresh mute foam on the bridge too. The one-ply white pickguard is a modern replacement, as is the quartet of knobs with gleaming aluminum caps. Cosmetic wear includes targeted buckle rash where the neck meets the body wings and on the back, and on the inside edge of the bass-side body horn, with a few additional expected dings on the body as a whole. The Mapleglo gloss finish has uniformly ambered over the decades and is 100% original with no touchup or overspray. A vintage black tolex hardshell case is included. The original handle is intact, the central latch is still functional, and the two outer latches are missing.
