Up for sale, a 1971 Gibson ES-335TD, honestly played and professionally setup. The guitar has also been modified from a trapeze tailpiece to a traditional stoptail for greater sustain and resonance. Acoustically, this guitar has a huge voice with tons of clarity and chop, and plugged in, this Gibson delivers the goods. The three-way coil tap switch (muted in the middle) allows for even snappier tonalities with the jangle and cut of a single coil. With semi-hollowbody maple body construction and a three-piece mahogany neck, the tone balances the immediacy of the center block and crisp top end of the maple with the soft attack and bloom of the semi-hollow construction. The guitar balances well on a strap and weighs in at 7lbs 11oz. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, we’ve strung this ES-335 with roundwound 11-50 strings and dialed in the action and intonation. The mahogany neck has a slender C shape at the nut with tons of shoulder and baseball bat heft from the 9th fret and beyond, with a profile depth of. 800″ at the 1st fret and 1.015″ at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard features pearl small block inlay and the wide frets have super flat crowns, showing faint uniform wear on frets 1-6, extending beneath the plain strings until the octave. Deserving of fretless-wonder status, the fretboard also shows light sporadic wear into the rosewood itself between frets 2-10. The guitar plays well in every register, and a new nut has been installed, measuring 1 9/16 in width. The headstock has been fitted with more recent Gibson Deluxe double line tuners with greened tulip buttons. All of the electronics work as they should, and the most likely scenario is that this guitar went back to the Gibson factory circa 1977 to be modified with the coil tap feature that gained popularity on the ES-335 model around’75. Visible through the bass side F hole, the original Norlin-era “Union Made” label is intact. The hardware on the body includes a modern Nashville bridge and stopboar tailpiece, as well as a pickguard furnished by MojoAxe. The guitar has a singular crack repair on the back bass-side lower bout of the body, and the finish was sanded and resprayed in the area surrounding the repair. There is also light overspray on the neck profile, which shows tight finish checking and palm wear down to the bare mahogany. The body binding is deeply ambered, with a few expected scattered dings and finish scratches on the body as a whole. There is also heavy lacquer checking on the bass side of the body and pick scuffing across the strum path. A vintage 335 case is included with black pebble tolex and duct tape around the case edges. Structurally sound, the case features function latches and the original handle. Check out our shop “Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar, ” and please let us know if we can answer any questions!
