Up for sale, a 1974 Rickenbacker 4001 in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Featuring a clean Burgundyglo finish and neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker thumps and growls with the best and the sustain is near endless. Currently strung with slinky roundwound strings, there’s equal parts midrange power and fundamental warmth available via the two original Hi-Gain single coil pickups. The bass is well balanced and quite light at 9lbs 1oz, and has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with low, comfortable action and solid intonation. The neck has a medium C shaped profile with a smooth gloss nitro lacquer finish and just enough roundness in the shoulders to feel substantial and sturdy. The 33 1/4 scale is Rickenbacker’s traditional long scale, and the lacquered slab rosewood fretboard features original frets and pearl triangle inlays. The frets retain their full factory height, showing notable wear on frets 1-7 and playing cleanly up the neck with no buzzing or dead spots. The nut measures a full 1 5/8 in width, with ideal string spacing. The headstock features the original Rickenbacker lucite logo/truss rod cover, as well as stock tuning machines that turn very smoothly and hold pitch well. The headstock also boasts the maple “wings” used in this era instead of the more common contrasting walnut wings. All of the electronics work as they should, with original solder joints on the CTS pots which date to the 14th week of 1974. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jackplate has a cleanly stamped serial number with “NI” prefix which dates to September of 1974. The chrome hardware on this bass is quite clean, and even the original mute foam is intact (albeit not horribly functional). The Burgundyglo nitro lacquer finish is still quite vibrant, having only lost a bit of the saturation in the last nearly 40 years. The bass exhibits buckle rash on the back behind the bass side body horn and a few scattered chips on the edges of the bass, particularly on the back lower bout edge. A modern silver tolex Rickenbacker vintage-style hardshell case is included with a plush blue velvet interior.
