Cryogenic treated fret wire for longer life and corrosion resistance. 2014 Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar. I picked up my 2014 Les Paul Studio yesterday from the Guitar Center in Bridgeton, MO. I had been in and out of the store for months trying to decide which Les Paul I wanted that was in my price range. The staff at the store were always helpful and never pushy. After a few months and several trips, I decided on the Les Paul Studio in Ebony Vintage Gloss. The guitar was absolutely perfect out of the box. The set-up was flawless. The action is low and the tone is amazing. Using the coil taps, you can create almost too many tones. The quality of this guitar is exactly what I would expect from Gibson. The finish of this guitar was surprising to me in a good way. I had only seen pictures of the Ebony Vintage Gloss so it was not what I expected. I expected a painted guitar. The finish is more of a deep, black stain with a light coating of gloss over it. Looking closely at the body, you can see the perfect grain in the maple top. This was a pleasant surprise because it shows that even for the lower priced Les Paul, Gibson used top quality wood. Gibson claims “Modern Weight” by routing out small sections of the mahogany. The weight is a bit lighter than the Standard but not by much and certainly did not effect the tone or sustain that one expects from a Les Paul. I highly recommend this guitar. Not just for the price but for the overall quality of the instrument. The price is just an added bonus. PRS now officially should start to worry. The neck is flat and straight and I dropped the action to 1/16 at the 12th fret with no buzz. After playing this guitar for a couple of weeks I have nothing to say but WOW! . For the price this is an excellent value and really lives up to the Les Paul name. I have many electric guitars (Fender, Gretsch, Danelectro) and previously owned a Les Paul Firebrand which was stolen. This and my Tele are my go to electrics now. Guitar Centers’ Customer service was great and very attentive FIVE STARS. Negatives: Gibson chose to go with a gig bag instead of a hard shell case this year. These are minor and overall it exceeds my expectations. I bought my 2014 Les Paul Studio just a few weeks ago. I wanted to wait to write the review so I could have some time to get to know the guitar. Overall, this thing is a beast. I can tackle Jazz, Heavy metal, and every genre in between. The tones that come out of here are just incredible. It has a very rich, dark, and clear sound. This guitar is amazing. I have never played a guitar with such clarity and sustain as this. The Push/Pull volume Pots are a cool feature. It is really interesting to get the single coil tones out of this guitar. The fretwork on this guitar is outstanding. I checked every fret in 3 places with my luthier’s fret rocker and they are absolutely flawless, perfectly level. Even with a very low action, there is no buzzing or fretting out at all, even on the hardest bends. Another major pro to this guitar is the size of the strap buttons. As the specifications indicate, they are quite large. I have not had a problem with the guitar falling off of the strap buttons at all. This is a very nice feature. I only have a few complaints about this guitar, and most of them are just my personal preference, not anything that hinders functionality. First, I really do not like the color of the pickguard and humbucker rings. At a later date, I may swap them out for a more classic looking cream color. I know that this is just part of the classic Gibson design, but it’s still in the way. The third thing that irritates me about this instrument is that the tuning machine on the 4th string did not match the other ones. The one on the 4th string is a Gibson deluxe tuner, while all of the other ones are Klusen deluxe machines. This doesn’t effect playability at all, but I did find it interesting that it didn’t match. Most people probably would not notice it. Last of all, and probably most importantly, the 3rd string tuning machine seems a little loose and occasionally slips out of tune. This is the only thing that I have found is wrong with this guitar as far as functionality is concerned, and I could probably take it in and get it repaired or replaced at no cost (thanks to Guitar Center’s Pro Coverage). Other than that, I love this guitar, it sounds great, it looks awesome, and it feels amazing. If you are looking to get a real Les Paul on a budget, look no farther, this is the best guitar I’ve ever owned and without a doubt one of the best I have ever played.
