Steve Howe's 1976 Gibson The Les Paul Wine Red -Used On YES and ASIA Recordings
Steve Howe’s 1976 Gibson The Les Paul Wine Red -Used On YES and ASIA Recordings! The Trogly’s Guitar Show! Howe’s guitar is a real privilege for me. I wanted to document this guitar for the whole world to see, so please enjoy all of these videos I’ve made of this guitar and feel free to subscribe to my channel to see more rare guitars documented. Inside Look – see the insides and individual parts that make the guitar up. V=a1dfn_e2u7w Video Tour- see the condition highlighted and a playing demo. V=La2u66QNt5E Tone Comparison – I compare the tones of my 1979 TLP versus Steve Howe’s TLP. Out of 77 total The Les Pauls made from’76-’79 this is probably the most famous celebrity-owned, toured and. One of them all. Take a look at the old live concerts and music videos with Yes and Asia and you’ll see this guitar on multiple occasions! It is also featured in his guitar collection book. #1 was the one originally given to Les Paul to play at the Grammy Show with Chet Atkins in 1976. Dennis Chandler who still owns it today. Les was then given #25. It’s interesting that Steve Howe’s was #26 – following right after Les’ TLP serial number. Of the 77 The Les Paul’s made, only 18 were in the Wine Red Finish. Whether you’re a fan of Mr. Howe’s work or not, this will be the new crown jewel in your collection. This guitar comes with its original Artist series case in the most desirable Oxblood exterior and purple interior. The case is holding up very well seeing as its held this guitar in its travels around the world. There are scratches and scuffs all around the case, but it still holds the guitar pretty well. However, Artist series cases are super fancy, but were not made to be a form-fitting case, so I would actually suggest getting a better case to store this guitar in. There is up and down motion while in the case, but back and forth it is secure. A complete look can be see in the Video Tour. Steve Howe toured with this guitar up until the early 2000s, you’d expect this guitar to be absolutely trashed and not a collectible example based on condition alone. However, you’d be surprised at just how well Mr. Howe took care of this guitar. Yes, there is buckle wear, scratches, dents and dings, but nothing that really destroys the overall look of the guitar. If it didn’t have this wear, it wouldn’t be as special! This guitar will come with a copy of the Steve Howe collection book where you can see the guitar for yourself in it. The wear spots, wood grain and unique’eye’ formations on the 7th fret and pickguard match perfect. Steve also signed the guitar under the plaque on the back of the headstock in’invisible ink. You can see it like a smudge in the right lighting and angle, but you really don’t see it until you hit the guitar under blacklight. You can see this in the blacklight portion of the Video Tour. Time for some specs – while this guitar is serialized as a’76, it was clearly built around 1975. Howe’s is the first one of these TLPs that I’ve seen still have a transitional neck tenon. A TLP’s body is built with a mahogany core that is surrounded by maple on all sides. What is unique about this example is the mahogany core is actually made with a pancake body construction – meaning this one has more maple than most examples made! Despite that, this guitar isn’t actually as bright sounding as my last 3 TLPs. Unstamped factory TTOP pickups, TP-6 Tailpiece and bridge. 1 piece heavily flamed maple neck with Schaller tuners. Black binding with 2 red stripes binding on the neck holding in the Ebony-Rosewood-Ebony sandwich fretboard. This thing is to die for! You can see all of these parts detailed in the Inside Look Video Medium 60s Profile – 11lbs The only modifications Mr. Howe made to this guitar are the original Tuner heads were swapped for larger ones (still original machines) and one of the fine tuner’s on the tailpiece (Low E) was swapped for a similar – but different – styled one. The frets show very minor wear and this guitar plays incredibly smooth up and down the neck. The face of the body has some light dings and scratches from use. The gold finish on the hardware and pickups has aged/worn off in some areas over the years. The back of the neck exhibits very little play ware with maybe just a few light impressions on the neck. There is some stand rash on the sides of the headstock. The back of the body shows lots of buckle worming and one rather large ding by the cutaway area. Thankfully, most of this wear on the back doesn’t show up in all angles and the finish is still present everywhere. The sides have some stand wear and some light nicks/dings, especially around the binding. It was a well-loved guitar that has been played all over the world. It has some honest play ware to show that it was loved and not abused. A comprehensive look at the guitar’s condition can be seen in the Video Tour. Conclusion This is a true dream guitar. Not only is it a rare guitar on its own, being one of 18 in this finish, it was owned and heavily played on for 30+ years by a Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame Legend! This is the last time you’ll see it for sale, likely in your lifetime. Hello and welcome to Trogly’s Guitars!
